I’m so happy to be able to design fun patterns for you, it’s my way of expressing myself! In every pattern I design, you will find a bit of Elles, my personal design aesthetic - the Misusu flavor. But those patterns are only a starting point for your own personal journey of creation. And I'm so happy to be a very small part of that journey!
You are the artist bringing a pattern - a blank canvas - to life by adding your own aesthetic in combining fabrics, colors and trims. I just LOVE seeing all your amazing makes and I feel inspired by them every day.
But what's even more inspiring to me as a designer, is when my patterns are being used as a building block to create something totally new: pattern hacking. By combining different patterns, adjusting the length or adding specific elements, you can truly transform a garment and make it your own. How cool is that?! I'm so proud to be a part of this co-creation!
To inspire you and help you in creating your own hack, we’ve started a new blog series, featuring the coolest hacks from our sewing community made with Misusu Patterns - first up the Bing Shirtigan. Did you create your own hack of the Bing Shirtigan (or other Misusu Pattern) and would you like to be featured in this blogpost? Please tag us in your own work with the hashtag #binghackmisusu or send me an email! We would love to see your work!
Instead of the chest pockets, Emily's daughter requested in-seam pockets in the side seam of her Bing Shirtigan. I love how adding something so simple, really changed to look of this Bing Shirtigan. Also, check out that lovely silver contrast tape on the sleeve!
Due to the different and complicated safety regulations all over the world, I chose not to add drawstrings to the Bing Shirtigan pattern. Anien cleverly added a faux drawstring through the hood tunnel as a design element, using the same striped fabric as the other contrast bands.
Lengthening a bodice - one of the easiest hacks out there - but with quite a dramatic effect! Sjouk lengthened the bodice to a dress length - the Bing dressigan! - and added a waistband elastic to create a more tailored look. What girl does not want a Bing dressigan?
I'm sure we're going to see many more up-cycling hacks with the Bing Shirtigan. Alexandra's is a good example! She used an old denim shirt for the lower bodice of her Bing Shirtigan, while keeping some original design elements like the double topstitching, placed on the box pleat. I'm off to browsing my husband's closet for some old shirts now!
This is what we like to call the accidental mistake turns opportunity hack! During the first phase of testing, Julia cut along the wrong line at the center front, leaving her 1,5 cm short (due to a design error by me...oops! Thank the world for testers, right?). She brilliantly resolved this issue, by adding a piece of contrasting burgundy fabric, matching the hood facing, sleeve cuffs and over-arm contrast tape. It totally looks like it's a design element of the pattern! Great job, Julia!
