Bing’s Bing Shirtigans

The majority of my patterns are created based on what I feel is missing in my kid’s wardrobe. My son Bing is a play hard fall hard kind of kid and clothes that don’t meet the “ultimate comfort” bill, just won’t be worn. Challenge accepted! Comfortable with a little twist, I’m hearing you buddy!

I personally love seeing Bing every once in a while, in something slightly more “dressed up”, like a button-down shirt. But he refuses to wear them! So I set out to design something super comfortable with some classic button-down elements. Say, cardigan meets shirt. Light bulb moment, a shirtigan!

Thanks to Bing, the Bing Shirtigan was “born”! By combining knit with woven fabrics, the Bing Shirtigan gives great opportunity to mix and match. I’ve made Bing 3 different versions, all with different fabric combinations and they’ve all been in heavy rotation! It really fits his skater boy look and lifestyle - it’s comfortable and great for layering, even as a light jacket!

This is the first shirtigan I made for Bing and I still love the combination of fabrics - a heathered grey french terry, a cotton flanel check and a dark blue corduroy for the pocket flaps. Whenever I get a chance to play with fabric direction, I will! Just to let you know, the final Bing Shirtigan pattern does not have a lined 3-piece hood (too heavy!) and I've also decided not to add a drawstring, due to the strict safety guidelines all over the world. Instead, the pattern comes with a 2-piece hood finished with a binding (pretty and not as heavy!) or a baseball collar. 

Here's the collared Bing Shirtigan in action. What modelling skills this boy has, right? ;D For this version I used a lovely blue summer sweat mixed with orange corduroy. The striped rib knit came from the stash. 

This is my son's favorite Bing Shirtigan. It's made entirely out of summer sweat, making it über comfortable. Here you can see the 2 pieced hood finished with a neon green binding, one of the options of the final pattern. Don't you just love when a garment is pretty on the inside too?
