Rowan Hack Along - Front Bodice
Cutting fabric is not exactly my favorite part of a sewing project... But the good news is that we’ve already done that yesterday and today you can focus on one of the funnest parts - seeing your design come to life! Today we’re going to assemble the front bodice - it’s so much fun to see everything come together! So let’s start!

The pocket

First, collect the pattern pieces with the pocket bags. With the right sides together, line up the pocket bag seams and pin in place. As you can see, the point of pattern piece 2 will stick out a bit over pattern piece 3 (see white arrow). But if you keep the seam allowance in mind, (the pink and yellow lines) you can see that everything will line up perfectly!

Stitch the seam using a knit stitch or a small zigzag stitch.

Finish the seam with a serger or a big zigzag stitch. Press the seam and the pocket down.

Turn the front bodice with the right side up. Match the fold of the pocket at the side seam with the notch on pattern piece 2. Pin the side seam in place and stay stitch together, 6mm (¼”) from the raw edge. The side of the pocket bag will later be finished in the side seam of the sweater/dress.

Collect pattern piece 1. With the right sides together, line up the raw edges, matching the notches of pattern piece one with the notches and seam of the front bodice. Again at both sides of the diagonal seam, the pattern pieces will stick out a bit. Pin in place and stitch the seam using a knit stitch or a small zigzag stitch.

Finish the seam with a serger or a big zigzag stitch. Press the seam and the pocket up.

There you have it - a beautifully finished front bodice with inseam pocket! If your custom colorblock design features additional colorblock seams, continue on with the same steps. Also, if your back bodice and/or sleeves are colorblocked, assemble them as well!

Tomorrow we’re going to focus on creating “hanger appeal” - closing the shoulder seams, inserting the neckband and finishing the inside of our neckband with a binding. Even when I’m sewing basics for my kids, I just LOVE adding a pop of color inside the neckband. There’s nothing more satisfying than a stack of handmades with beautifully finished colorful insides!

See you tomorrow!
XO Elles
