Rowan Dress Hackalong PT1 - Kick off

April 02, 2021

Jump to the next post in the hack along: Rowan Dress Hackalong PT2 - The Basics.

Hacking is in our DNA. In designing my patterns, I usually start off with a simple idea. But most of the time the end result is a pattern jam-packed with options, perfect for colorblocking and scrap busting. I just love to give you - the maker - all the tools to get creative with yourself! But beyond the pattern, there’re still so many fun and simple ways to get even more out of your pattern! That’s why we’ve started our Misusu Hackalogue - a catalogue of pattern hacks - with ideas to hack your patterns.

This was all inspired by last year’s hackalong - the Rowan Sweater Hackalong. During this hackalong, we hacked our beloved FREE Rowan Tee pattern into a colorblocked sweater with an optional inseam pocket. And it turned out to be an amazing success! We were overwhelmed with the response and we still see amazing hacked Rowan Sweaters popping up on our socials!

So this year, we wanted to repeat the fun and get your kids ready for summer by doing a Rowan Dress Hackalong! When we browsed the internet for dress inspiration, we were amazed how many styles in the basis resembled our Rowan Tee. Just add a simple colorblock, add an elastic waist or ruffle and you’ve transformed the look completely.

Design Template

During this hackalong we’ll be focusing on creating a simple cinched elastic waist dress with  an hourglass colorblock in 2 versions - A-line skirt and circle skirt. But we will also go into other design options - playing with the length, adding details - that create totally different looks! Like last year, we’ve also created 4 different design templates - two based on our main colorblock styles and two blank templates to design your own colorblock! This template is a great starting point to design your dress - add fabric squares of the fabrics you’re going to use and write down important measurements of your child. You can find the design templates in the files section in our FB group.

Schedule

Similar to our previous hackalong, we’re going to break up all the steps into 5 different segments. Every segment will go live every 3-4 days, giving you plenty of time to hackalong! But you can also take things slow and follow the hackalong at your own pace!

In the next segment we will going over the basics - getting your supplies ready, selecting the correct size and tracing your base pattern. All the fun & buzz will take place in our Sew & Tell Facebook group. So if you’re looking for some hack along inspiration or some cheers along the way, make sure to join us there
